The Adelaide Hills Food ChainMay 2008
AHF Members make VIC Famil a successThank you to all the Fabulous Adelaide Hills Food Trails operators for making the Hills Visitor Information Centre-Food Trails famil (familiarization) held in April such a great success. The 24 Hahndorf and Mt Lofty Visitor Information Centre staff who spent the day touring and tasting their way around the Hills on the Fabulous Adelaide Hills Food Trail said they were really impressed with the welcome and effort made by the operators to showcase their contribution to the Fabulous Adelaide Hills Food Trails and to the Hills food industry in general. Famils are one of the most efficient ways of promoting tourism experiences to the public via public relations people like regional visitor information centre staff and the media. The Hahndorf and Mt Lofty Visitor Information Centre staff (who are mostly volunteers) are the interface between Adelaide Hills Food and visitors to the region, so it is really important for the VIC staff to be up-to-date and familiar with food tourism experiences that are on offer in the Hills. Unfortunately, the Hahndorf leg (Beerenberg, In the Pickle, Lloyd Bros Wines and The Olive Grove and Udder Delights) was not able to be covered due to lack of time, but we are planning a walking tour of Hahndorf food experiences to make up for this in the near future. The only deficiencies noticed in the Food Trails were lack of identifying signage and availability of Adelaide Hills Food brochures at operator's businesses. Adelaide Hills Food committee member Mike Willoughby is currently seeking quotes and designs for signage identifying food businesses that are part of the Fabulous Adelaide Hills Food Trails. Adelaide Hills Food brochures are available by calling into the Adelaide Hills Regional Development Board office at 38 Adelaide Road, Mt Barker, or by contacting me at the phone numbers or email address below. A big thank you to Mike Willoughby and Cathy Peacock for opening the Heart of the Hills Market to showcase its new regional food section Harroughby's and to host the luncheon for the VIC staff; to Sean Bradshaw for the impressive platters of regional food; to Cocolat for supplying the delicious dessert cake; and to Bird In Hand Winery and Hahndorf Hill Winery for donating the wine. Thank you all again for making the day such a great success. Mary Fowler 08-8391 1374 |

Beerenberg contracted to supply major resorts and hotelHahndorf’s Beerenberg Farm has won a contract to supply jam and honey to the Shangri-La Hotel and Resorts Group throughout Asia and the Middle East. Company managing director Anthony Paech said the contract was “prestigious” and meant their produce would be enjoyed at the Shangri-La during the Beijjing Olympics. More than 1.5 million portion size jars and foil packs of honey and jam will be served at hotels and resorts in China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, India, Thailand and Dubai over the next year. Mr Paech said other contracts were being negotiated in the US, Japan and India. “Despite strong price competition from other brands from all over the world, Beerenberg won because we offer the true taste of the farm,” he said. “It is our authenticity and story that we are exporting, more than just jam and honey.” Beerenberg now exports to 24 Asian countries and is used by five-star hotels and leading international airlines, including Qantas. Six successive generations of the Paech family have owned and worked on the 100ha Beerenberg Farm at Hahndorf.
