Dairy business booming

Bernd Regehr was enlisted from Europe.

AN award-winning Hills dairy business has become the State’s first bio-dynamic cheese producer and has plans to launch an on-site cafe to showcase its new range, along with other regional produce.

B.-d. Farm Paris Creek is producing seven new cheese varieties that are proving a hit with customers at markets across the State. It is the latest in a line of growth for the dairy business, adding to its popular yoghurts and quark, a recent award-winner.

The cheese factory began production in December, fulfilling the long-term goal of owners Ulli and Helmut Spranz, who established their dairy farm 20 years ago. “We are very excited that we’ve got there now, it’s like a dream come true,” Mrs Spranz said.

The cheesery is expected to create more than 35 new jobs over the first seven years of its operation.

Expert cheesemaker Bernd Regehr was enlisted from Europe to oversee the production of the new cheese line that includes hard and soft cheeses, such as Charlesburg, Camembert and Brie, and a washed-rind variety.

The couple will host a two-day workshop at their property with expert advice on how farmers and home gardeners can adopt bio-dynamic principles.

“We want to stimulate more farmers to go bio-dynamic to produce things from grain to hay, anything in agriculture, but also to get more milk for our production,” Mrs Spranz said. The workshop will run on March 3-4. (Excerpt from The Courier).

Sydney success story

South Australian cheese maker, Woodside Cheese Wrights, has won Most Successful Sheep, Goat & Buffalo Milk Exhibitor at the Sydney Royal Show for the 4th year in a row. The company also won the trophy for the Most Successful Exhibitor in Sheep, Goat and Buffalo Milk categories as it has done in five of the last six years.

Gold Medals were awarded to Woodside Pompeii (a new cheese introduced in 2007), Woodside Goat Curd, and Woodside Monet. Other medals were awarded for Woodside’s Figaro, Chevre, Fibonacci, Etzy Ketzy, and Vigneron cheeses.

Ms Lloyd is delighted with winning Gold in Class 51 - the Cheese Makers Competition (for the maker of the best cheese, other than cheddar).

The gold medal was awarded for the making of her new cheese, Pompeii, a washed rind, semi hard, cow's milk cheese with a distinctive layer of ash in the centre of the cheese.

She was also impressed with the continued success of her range of seasonal cheeses such as Monet (a flower decorated goat cheese), Fibonacci (a thin mould ripened goat cheese), Etzy Ketzy (a half goat, half cow cheese) and Vigneron (a vine wrapped white mould goat cheese).

Woodside Cheese Wrights CEO and head cheesemaker, Ms Kris Lloyd, said that continued success at the Sydney Show and others throughout Australia was important, as it confirms the consistent quality of her specialty cheeses and is an added recognition for the hard work done by her staff.

"It is important in continuing to build the company's national reputation and the overall quality of Australian specialty cheeses," Ms Lloyd said.

Thinker in Residence

Dr Andrew Fearne, Adelaide's next Thinker in Residence, arrived in South Australia in late February for the first of four stages.

He will work with South Australia's food and wine sectors to improve their products; use packaging, promotion and pricing more effectively; and think more strategically about the changing needs of consumers and the characteristics of particular markets.

Dr Fearne is internationally recognised as a leader in consumer behaviour and value chain management - the coordination of supply chain from 'paddock to plate' in an international market.

In his work, he challenges conventional thinking and provokes people from different industry and organisational perspectives to think about their roles and responsibilities in different ways, recognising the importance of innovation.

Exports boost food prices

Global prices for Australian farm exports have hit their highest levels in almost a quarter of a century, with experts warning of flow on price hikes at the supermarket checkout. According to the Westpac NFF Commodity Index the global prices for wheat, beef, sugar, dairy, canola and barley ended on highs last month. They averaged gains of 19.5% for the year.

Rising incomes and purchasing power - in Asia in particular - has seen demand for protein products such as beef and dairy skyrocket.

Calls for farmers looking for love

Casting call.

Following the incredible success of The Farmer Wants A Wife in 2007, the Nine Network and FremantleMedia Australia are now casting farmers for the much anticipated second series.

The Farmer Wants A Wife will see a dozen farmers profiled on a website and through a series of events – web-chat, speed-dating, bush dance, country stays and city escapes – they will be reduced to six couples. The ultimate goal is finding true love just as our series 1 favourites Chris and Kim did.

The Farmer Wants a Wife is a feel-good story of love and romance.  This is not a competition. There's no prize money and the only winner in the end... is LOVE.

The producers are searching nationally for real farmers aged between 25 and 45 who are looking to meet their one true love. Bachelors must be working farmers, be it grazier, dairy, citrus, oyster, etc.  Interested men should drop an email with an introduction to nicola@mcgregorcasting.com or call (02) 9557 2844 to register interest.

TELSTRA TASTE: Telstra boss, Sol Trujillo (top right), was invited to the SA Suite at the Clipsal 500. But
rather than dine on the fresh South Australian lunch menu, he slipped out to the general admission area to get a hot dog and chips. Stopped from re-entering the suite with food, Sol ate his fast food outside in the passageway. (Source: Crikey!)
