Hills producers take honours
at Premier's Food Awards 2007

Hills honey and cheese producers have won top honors in the 2007 Premier’s Food Awards.

The awards, now in their 10th year, aim to recognise creativity and innovation in the SA food industry.

Woodside Cheese Wrights took out the Finished Food award for medium-sized businesses (five to 20 employees) while Buzz Honey won the award for small businesses (up to five staff).

Jude and Tim Crowe of Buzz Honey entered the food awards for the first time this year and were thrilled to win the small business category.

The Dawesley couple established the company in 2000, and now produce a range of honeys from the Hills, Murray Mallee, Riverland and Limesone Coast, as well as honeycomb.

Mrs Crowe said the pair had worked full-time together since 2002.

“We started with nothing and both had other jobs, but now we’ve built up a solid financial foundation,” she said.

“We’ve employed one other person and will be putting on another soon, as well as a seasonal worker.

“We’re lucky to have such enticing and enviable honey flavors at our doorstep.”

Mrs Crowe said they were proud of making sure the honeys stayed perfect and unique, untouched and unblended, to retain their distinctive flavors.

For Woodside cheesemaker Kris Lloyd this is the fourth win in six years.

“I put it down to listening to customers’ feedback, and creating new products,” she said.

“We try to be very different, really out there.”

For example her latest cheese uses a new kind of mould, and has a single vine leaf on top.

The company produces 50 to 60 tonnes of cheese a year and supplies Qantas for business and first class.

Over the last financial year it experienced a 21% growth.

Several other Hills food companies were finalists in the awards, including B. -d. Farm Paris Creek, T & R Pastoral, Baylies of Strathalbyn, Cocolat and Richard Gunner’s Fine Meats.

Locavore's 100-mile diet

A Stirling cafe has become the first in SA to promote the ‘100-mile diet’ - local eating for global change.

The aim of Locavore (means local-eater) is to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the transportation of food from the producer to the table.

Proprietors Chris March of Upper Sturt and Nathan Crudden of Teringie are passionate about using local produce at the same time as reducing the environmental cost of transporting food.

Mr Crudden said it was estimated that in the modern industrialised food system, every item travelled an average of 2400 km before ending up on the plate.

“That’s a lot of greenhouse gas emissions,” he said.

“In contrast we draw as much produce as possible from a 100-mile (160km) radius of Stirling.”

“If we can’t source the food locally, we look for family-farmed produce, then organic or fair trade produce.”

The partners, who have been involved in the food and catering industry for many years, learned about the 100-mile diet while researching new developments in food.

The concept began in the US in 2005, then a Canadian couple coined the term during a year-long experiment in which they ate only produce grown within 100 miles of their home.

Mr March said Locavore’s menus were devised around the produce available, rather than from standard recipes.

“For example, we don’t serve rice or pineapples,” he said.

“But we’re very fortunate that so much produce is available within the 160km limit.

“We even have tea, as well as spices, fruit, meat, vegetables, cheese, olives, flour and seafood.”

From the Chairman's desk

Hello Fellow Members,

I hope you're all well and busy.

The 2007/2008 edition of the Adelaide Hills Food Guide has landed.

There are 22,000 copies of it in my shed at Hahndorf. Please drop by between 9am and 5pm to collect a box or two. A call to see I'm home would probably be a good Idea as we are in and out all the time with our business.

It has come to my attention that some members may not be receiving all the information they require concerning Hills Food issues, events etc. If this is the case please contact myself of Mary Fowler to rectify this situation.

There are a number of monthly newsletters from PIRSA and Flavour SA which have up-to-date info on the State and National food scene.

See below for information on the new IDO Work Focus Draft as part of the 2007- 2010 Food Plan. It outlines the new structure of the IDOs (formerly FIDOs) in the Food Business Innovation Plan.

Most of these positions are now filled and Induction is under way. We should see the new IDOs on the ground within weeks.

King regards
