The Adelaide Hills Food ChainNovember 2007
Fabulous Adelaide Hills Food Trails launchedBird in Hand Sparkling Pinot Noir flowed and mouths watered over Sean Bradshaw and Justin Markos’ delicious Adelaide Hills Food morsels when the Fabulous Adelaide Hills Food Trails, including the Yummy Adelaide Hills Food Trail for Kids, were launched at Bird in Hand Winery last month. Adelaide Hills journalist and ambassador Christine McCabe addressed the crowd of over 80 guests, speaking about the importance of food tourism to educate the consumer and brand and promote this bountiful region. In particular, she spoke about the Fabulous Adelaide Hills Food Trails being a portal to food tourism in the area, providing the public with access to information, product and food experiences which they may not otherwise have been aware of.
Guests showed an enormous amount of interest in The Yummy Adelaide Hills Food Trail for Kids, for its educational, entertainment and opportunity buying value. Generously sponsored by Adelaide Hills Tourism, Adelaide Hills Regional Development, the South Central Area Consultative Committee and Food SA, 30,000 copies of the Fabulous Adelaide Hills Food Trails have been produced, providing information and a map to places where food tourists can enjoy complimentary tastings of local produce or restaurants, cafes and cellar doors where they can sit down to a regional meal or platter. The new Fabulous Adelaide Hills Food Trails brochure, featuring images by local artist Stephen Trebilcock (courtesy of Hill-Smith Fine Art Gallery), will not be available to the public until December 1st, when the Trails officially open. Thank you to Bird in Hand Winery for so generously hosting the launch of the Fabulous Adelaide Hills Food Trails, to Christine McCabe for launching the Trails, and to all the Adelaide Hills Food producers who donated produce so that HQ Cuisine’s Sean Bradshaw and Mt Lofty House Head Chef Justin Markos could create the delicious food for the event. |

In the NewsSinclair's makes Premier's NRM Awards short list
Mintaro Hideaway and Sinclair's Gully Wine made the finalists of the 2007 South Australian Landcare and Premiers Natural Resource Management Awards. New members Sue and Sean Delaney, who recently opened Sinclair's Gully Vineyard and Cellar Door to the public at Norton Summit in the Adelaide Hills, specialise in handcrafted, estate grown, cool climate Adelaide Hills wines, producing award winning Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. In the past 10 years they have worked on this property to restore the environment of two threatened species. Along the way they have discovered more than 150 plant species and 62 bird species of which three plant and 22 bird species are seriously declining in number. The Delaneys later partnered with neighbours and government to extend the range of protection to 18 adjoining properties encompassing a total of 200ha. The property is now used as an education site for environmental groups, the local community and for Federal, State and Local Government officers. A wildlife corridor of continuous native vegetation between the Morialta, Black Hill, Marble Hill and Montacute Conservation Parks encompassing 1200haa has now been re-established. Tasting Australia has international reachThere was no “free lunch” on the Adelaide Hills Food-Tasting Australia media tour, the 25 national and international food writers who visited our region last month had to work hard for the opportunity to taste the delights of our region. Each journalist was allocated to a morning and afternoon of hands-on Adelaide Hills Food experiences, including honey extraction at Buzz Honey, cheese making at Udder Delights, bread making at Millie’s Bakery, sausage making at Hahndorf Venison and chocolate making at Cocolat.
Thank you to Hahndorf Hill Winery for hosting the lunch so beautifully, to Udder Delights’ Sheree Sullivan for her inspiring welcome address to guests, to HQ Cuisine’s Sean Bradshaw for producing such a fabulous lunch from Adelaide Hills produce, to all the Adelaide Hills Food producers who so generously donated product for the lunch and, finally, a huge thank you to the Adelaide Hills Regional Development Board, the South Central Area Consultative Committee, Adelaide Hills Tourism and Food SA for their financial and in-kind support. Positive feedback from the journalists has been overwhelming they really enjoyed the “hands-on” approach to experiencing Adelaide Hills Food, as opposed to just tasting and sightseeing and there were no complaints! Coveted award helps put Hills produce on national platter
Justin Markos and his team from Mt Lofty House were competing against more than 60 chefs from across the country in Tasting Australia’s regional culinary competition. They had three hours to create a three-course menu for four people, using ingredients sourced from the Hills, along with matching wines. Mr Markos said this was the first year he and his chefs had entered the competition. “We were just hoping for a top 10 finish,” he said. “To take home the bronze is a real honor and an absolute dream come true. “I couldn’t be prouder of the team, the region we represented, and the amazing support we’ve received. “We spent nearly seven months preparing for the competition, and the entire region has been behind us all the way,” Mr Markos said. “We aimed to showcase the unique features of the Hills by including ingredients like partridge, venison and apples. “Even our cutlery was hand-created in Hahndorf, using locally sourced deer antler.” The best region gold award was won by the ACT northern districts, while the greater Melbourne team won silver. -- The Courier, October 31, 2007
At just two years old, the SA CheeseFest attracted over 180 entries that were, in some classes, the strongest of any show in Australia according to Chief Judge Neil Willman. Willman said that the average quality was higher than last year and in only one of the 12 categories was no medal awarded. The SA CheeseFest competition only awards Gold medals which means that often excellent cheeses are just a few points short of being Gold. South Australia’s CheeseFest 07 was held at McLaren Vale & Fleurieu Visitors Centre, McLaren Vale, South Australia, on October 21. Like all regionally organised shows, motivates more of the local small cheese makers to enter but this is a true national competition and they were all judged against Australia’s, and this year, some of New Zealand’s best. The CheeseFest convenor and CheeseSA chair Kris Lloyd from Woodside Cheese Wrights worked hard to again create a team of excellent SA and interstate judges. Along with the 22 Gold Medals, there is a 2007 Champion Cheese trophy, and an Award for the Winemakers and the Media panel choices. “Artisan cheeses are so strongly about regional tastes, so each year we involve the local winemakers and food media to participate” Kris said. This year the Champion cheese was from Victoria Glaetzer’s Barossa Valley Cheese Company with a its Washington washed rind. Many of the winning cheeses were available at the CheeseFest public event held at the McLaren Vale and Fleurieu Visitors Centre, were along with cheesemakers and suppliers, local restaurants and wineries offered cheese inspired dishes and tastings. Warm weather brought a record crowd to an event that has become an important part of South Australia’s reputation for fine food and beverages.
