Network Night

The recent Adelaide Hills Food Network Event was a marvellous evening for the Members and Friends who were able to attend our last gathering for the year on Monday, November 6th at B.-d. Farm Paris Creek.
B.-d. Farm Paris Creek is situated in a beautiful location near Meadows in the Adelaide Hills where owner Ulli Spranz told us her very inspiring story of how she and her husband Helmut and their five children started their organic and biodynamic dairy and developed the very successful business.
They have built a modern state-of-the-art factory which produces milk, yoghurt, butter and quark for all states of Australia and, in the New Year, plan to have cheese production up and running.
Ulli gave us an in-depth insight as to how the business began and progressed with its ups and downs, frustrations and joys that we as food producers all know. However, with their dedication and will power they have made it and the many awards on display show how successful they are.
It was a great evening with a factory tour, delicious food supplied by Ulli and the AHF Group and fine wines from Longview Vineyard.
Members and Friends, please join us when next we meet in February 2007 to visit another successful Adelaide Hills Food business.

Stirling Market's new location a hit

A couple of bands helped create a festival atmosphere at Stirling Market's first day in its new location - under the shady trees of Druid Avenue. AHF Members Tumbeela Native Bushfoods and Araluen were among the stallholders on the day.
You can download a Quicktime MOV file to get an idea of what the market was like. (Download 1.6mb file here.)

Excellent exposure

The Adelaide Hills Food Chain is a great place for members and associated businesses to advertise products, services, opportunities and events - in fact, anything that relates to our food industry.
Reaching Adelaide Hills Food Members and Friends, local and interstate food media, Adelaide Hills Tourism Marketing Committee members and members of the Adelaide Hills Wine Region, advertising in the Adelaide Hills Food Chain represents fantastic value at $40 plus GST per standard supplied ad (see examples here).
If you would like to advertise in the next issue of the Adelaide Hills Food Chain visit www.sema4.com.au/ahf/advert/. or phone Andrew Kelleher at Sema4 Media on 0411 025 076.

Future of the FIDO

Denise Manson, Food Industry Development Officer

It has been another very busy month for the food group. Rob May and I attended the Food Group's Workshop at Penola at the beginning of the month, which was an opportunity to find out what some of the other groups were doing and to discuss the future of the Food Program, particularly the funding of the FIDOs with the Minister, the Hon Rory McEwen. He made it clear that when the current phase of the program finishes next June he would expect the Food Groups to become more independent from their FIDOs, and if there was future funding, the program would take a different form. Decisions about this are being taken at the moment and we expect to know early next year.

AHF features at Adelaide Showground Farmers Market

As you all know by now, December is Adelaide Hills Food month at the Adelaide Showground Farmers Market, a unique chance for us to showcase the region to 6000 dedicated foodies per week in the run up to Christmas. I have been busily matchmaking between members who produce food and those who cook and have come up with some marriages made in heaven! I know that December is hell on legs for most of you, but if you haven't already had a chance to visit the Adelaide Showgrounds Farmers Market do try and get down there this month. It is a great place to catch up with friends from the city or take children as well as shop. Here is a rundown of what is on offer...
3 December
Willabrand, Longview Wines, Cottonville Farm (unusual berries) - Louise of the caterers (Longview's chefs) in the kitchen demonstrating Raspberries in a Chardonnay Jelly.
10 December
Foods from the Edge, Willabrand, Araluen, Hahndorf Venison, Cottonville Farm - David Adamson in the kitchen demonstrating dukkah-coated venison, and Willa Wauchope with a Figgy Pudding.
17 December
Ruby Spoon Jams (and rhubarb), Premium Olives, Willabrand - Donna from six degrees @ Cafe Jazz cooking savoury muffins for adults and sweet ones for children.
24 December
HQ Cuisine, Bremer Cafe, Willabrand - Sean of HQ Cuisine demonstrating finger food for parties.
31 December
Willabrand and Araluen - kitchen demo to be decided.
Hahndorf Venison, B.-d. Farm Paris Creek and Fruitwise also have stalls at the market each week and I am hoping that Terena Blanton Downs of Cocolat will be doing Christmas cakes and puddings.
Visit www.asfm.org.au to find out more.

Food Grants Workshop

This was held at Stangate House in Aldgate last Monday evening and was well attended. Thank you to everyone who came at a very busy time of year, there was a lot of information to absorb and some of the presentations were quite long.
Our presenters were Will Joscelyne of FoodSA, Brenton Pain of AusIndustry and Vivienne Goodenough of South Central Area Consultative Committee and I would particularly like to thank Pam Beal of Fruitwise for talking about how a SCACC grant helped her business. If anyone was unable to attend but would like more information, please contact me.
Stangate House is a very good venue for a small workshop with a lovely garden around it. It is owned by the National Trust and administered by volunteers. If any of you need a small and special venue at a very reasonable price, contact me and I will pass on their number.

Restaurant News

Hahndorf Hill Winery achieved the distinction of being one of only nine most recommended Vine Dining Restaurants featured in Dining Among the Vines.
This was in a feature in the Weekend Australian listing James Halliday's Top 100 Wines. The parochial among you may be interested to know that there were three listed from SA including Bridgewater Mill and only one each from Victoria and NSW. Marc Dobson and Larry Jacobs really believe that the quality of Hills food, which their menu specialises in, played a pivotal role in winning the listing and would like to thank all of their producers.
Longview Vineyard will be opening every Sunday for lunch in the New Year and Stephanie and Louise of `the caterers' who cook there are very interested in giving the menu a strong regional focus and would like to meet anyone interested in supplying Longview.

Justin Markos has entered his team from Mount Lofty House in the Lifestyle Channel Regional Culinary Competition which takes place as part of Tasting Australia later next year. They stepped in early to be certain of snapping up the Adelaide Hills region and will be working on a menu which highlights the very best of our local produce.

Please contact me if you are interested in either of these opportunities to supply produce.

Kangaroo Island

Last week I attended a workshop on KI with the SCACC and we had the opportunity to discuss issues that the regions - including Adelaide Hills - are facing, of which drought was the most obvious. The drought is hitting hard on KI, with farmers now destocking and being paid as little as $2 per head for sheep.
Another big issue for the Island is biosecurity, protecting the unique species like the Ligurian bee from contamination and stopping the import of pests such as foxes and ferrets. Food producers there have an additional cost of crossing the 15km stretch of water each time they need to do business on the mainland (or the north island as it is wryly known). Funding of basic infrastructure is a very big issue as such a small population does not generate enough in rates to provide the infrastructure needed for the area and tourists, while very welcome, do not pay rates but do need roads and that infrastructure deficit clearly impacts on all businesses including food.
